Garden sheds today are built in many different shapes and sizes. They can be square, oblong, round, barn shaped, one story, two stories, and many other configurations. They can also be steel, wood, plastic, fibreglass, vinyl and log or made from other types of material. The person in need of a shed should take the time to review all of the available possibilities and also determine the size and shape needed. Information abounds on all types of sheds on the internet so doing the research is relatively simple.

After doing some research and selecting the possibilities of interest the potential buyer should go out to a location where sheds are sold and look at the actual sheds that are of interest.  Pictures can often be deceiving so it helps to view the actual shed (or at least the size and shape) before making a purchase decision. Since sheds are fairly large purchases and it is likely to be kept for a long time.  Make sure the shed purchased is exactly what is needed to serve the intended purpose.

Think about the purpose of the shed. Is it strictly for storage space or is there another purpose such as a workshop. Is there a special item to be stored such as a car or a boat and if so are there any special needs for the item stored, such as, heat, light, humidity, etc. The shed should be big enough for its intended purpose but not too big because of the cost involved. Think through the possible uses of the shed. It may be for storage now, but later it may be used for something else like a workshop.  Plan a head for future needs that can be anticipated.

Think about the style of shed wanted. Make sure it fits with the space and surroundings. Make sure the shed and its location will not interfere with or cause the neighbors problems. If the location for the shed is close to the property line make sure it does not interfere with the use of their property. Also, consider restrictions in the neighborhood. Sheds may be prohibited or sheds over a certain size may be prohibited. Do thorough research on all possibilities before buying a shed; if this is not done there may be unanticipated issues to deal with.

The shed purchased may be available in a kit. Buying a kit could save considerable money, but consider the effort and skill level needed to assemble the kit.  It may cost more in the long run if the buyer is unable to assemble it for any reason and ends up hiring the work done.

Consider the type of finish on the shed, does it need to be waterproofed, painted or stained? If so can it be purchased already finished? A shed can be purchased completely finished or not so the buyer should carefully consider what he or she can do and are willing to do to save money.  Since a shed should last many years research maintenance issues as well so the shed can be kept in good shape.
